Oldcastle Poetry Smackdown Announcement from Master Dunstan  leHeryngmongere:

Greetings and Well wishes unto all the Poets, Lyricists, Orators and Wordsmiths in this, the fairest of all Kingdoms, Atlantia!

This year (2019) at the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival (assuming the autocrat lets us in) there shall once again be held THE Duke Gyrth Oldcastle Memorial Poetry Smackdown, this one being the twelfth such annual event.

‘WHAT, PRAYTELL, IS A POETRY SMACKDOWN?’ I sense you asking . . .
I’m glad you asked.

The smackdown serves as an opportunity for poets of all experience levels to come and display their wordsmithing prowess in front of others in the spirit of good fun. This is not a competition, though each entrant shall be given a token to give to their favorite entry. And yes, occasionally some of the poets use this opportunity to . . . . make statements about each other. But that is by no means a requirement this year.

Entrants are asked to write the poems beforehand (this year there are two (2) poems required) and to either show up at the KASF to read their poems or to send them along with someone to read or to send them to me (the moderator of this year’s smack down) and I shall arrange to have them read.

There is an optional third poem that will be only for those who show up. The morning of the competition come find me and I will give you a verbal prompt. See #3 for a description below.

1) ENTRY POEM In honor of a great person and poet (Duke Gyrth Oldcastle) and in defiance of the many negative things happening in the SCA lately you must write a poem, in any period style, that speaks of the reason(s) why you still play in this game and dream this dream we share.

2) SHORT BUT SWEET- LET’S ALL TWEET!- A poem in any period style that speaks of a person that inspires you. Please note the definition of inspire; The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something. This can be a positive inspirational message or a full on smackdown, as long as it is about some form of inspiration. The catch is- it has to 144 words or less (not counting the title)

3) (OPTIONAL) THAT’S DEBATABLE- This one is only for folks who show up to the smackdown. In honor of the 500th anniversary of the debate between Martin Luther and John Eck wherein Martin famously denounces the Divine right of the Pope, I am going to give you a prompt and a note on whether or not you are ‘pro’ or ‘con’ for that prompt. Someone else unknown to you will be given the opposite side for that same prompt. You will be required to write, on site, a poem in any period style defending your stance. Then you and your oppone . . .er . . . colleague . . . will go head to head at the end of the smackdown.

Any questions, concerns, or dirty limericks should be addressed directly to me, your humble moderator.

Master Dunstan leHeryngmongere
On facebook you can message Keith Nealson if you have questions.

By Baroness Sophia the Orange, immediate past Guildmistress of the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild

At the Atlantia University’s 100th session this Saturday, February 2, 2019, I officially passed the torch of leadership for the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild to Lady Jeane Kilmeny! Vivat!

SCA Guilds are unofficial organizations, similar to households, that are created and managed by the people invested in them. Like so many aspects of the SCA, you get out of it what you put into it.

After 3+ years of re-energizing this guild, I felt it was time to pass on leadership, and Kilmeny accepted my invitation. She is a fountain of great ideas, new energy, and stuff I never would have thought of. I will still pitch in, especially for technical support for this blog and the Google resources we’ve been using for sharing information within the guild. And now, the buck stops with the magnificent Kilmeny. She will serve our community well, and I’m thrilled to pass this torch to her.

Passing the torch of leadership to Lady Jeane Kilmeny for the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild

Below is the introduction of Kilmeny I gave the audience at University’s convocation yesterday. Many thanks to Mistress Adriana for allowing us time during the convocation to do this business.

Passing the Torch to Lady Jeane Kilmeny:

Bards are the foundation of Performing Arts in the SCA. Bards were the first ones to create space at SCA events for a person to take the stage and sing. Blossoming from the bardic foundation, many other performing arts have found space in the SCA: vocal, instrumental, solo, groups, theater: both scripted and improvised, commedia dell’ arte, storytelling, magic, sword dancing, and many more.

The Atlantia Performing Arts Guild provides informal structure for performing artists to network and find resources. That structure includes: an email list, roster, blog, and a Google drive for sharing tons of documents. (The facebook group “Bards and Performers of Atlantia was started by Lady Scholastica Joycours before the Guild was re-energized, so it’s not an official resource of the Guild, but that’s really splitting hairs. We’re all using the FB group to share and network.)

This Guild was started by Master Corun McAndra in 2002 with a royal charter and an email list on Yahoogroups. In 2015, with Corun’s blessing, Her Majesty Adelhait allowed me permission to re-energize the guild. Today, I pass the torch of leadership to an awesome new leader, Lady Jeane Kilmeny! <applause>

Kilmeny gets the job done with passion, accountability, and empathy. She works successfully with a wide variety of people, including special needs folks, and all the crazy wacky people all of us SCAdians are. She’s a mother of 2 and has been playing in the SCA for over 20 years. She pays attention to individual needs and balances them with the needs of the community making the SCA experience better for all of us.

She is reliable, holds herself accountable, and has a mischievous sense of humor.

At University alone, she started taking classes in 1994. She started teaching here in 2002. She has served many times as Autocrat, Nastycrat, Children’s Activities Coordinator, Performing Arts Coordinator, she’s fought heavy weapons, she sings, and she can teach you a ton about Irish culture!

Lady Jeane Kilmeny now has the torch!

My lords and ladies, I give you the new Guildmistress of the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild, Lady Jean Kilmeny! <the crowd goes wild!>

Group hug!

All photos here were taken by Andrea Nichols and used here with her permission. Thanks Andrea!! <3

The Atlantia Royal Players are a team of performers that are both excellent performers and work to create time and space for performing arts to happen at SCA events.

This team of administrator-performers is comprised of performers from a wide variety of different performing arts as well as geographically spread throughout our fair kingdom.

At Pennsic 2016, Their Majesties of Atlantia, Dietrich and Thora, kicked off this new experimental program at Royal Court.  At court during Pennsic 2017, Their Majesties of Atlantia, Cuan and Signy, witnessed the success of the first year of this program and blessed the team to continue.

At Pennsic Royal Court on August 8, 2018, Their Majesties of Atlantia, Dietrich and Una, will again witness and bless the Royal Players. The team members for Year 2 will be honored, and the team members for Year 3 will be introduced to the populace.

Each summer, the existing team members have the option to continue for the coming year or opt out. They also invite new members based on who they have seen devoting effort to both excellence in performing and also volunteering to create time and space for performing arts at events.

The Royal Players team for Year 2 are the following talented and hardworking performers:

  1. Lady Scholastica Joycors – storytelling
  2. Lady Harper an Cu – instrumental and vocal music
  3. Lady Meriorie Matheson – theater
  4. Lord Hákon Erfikvaethiskald – solo and ensemble singing
  5. Mistress Fevronia Murometsa – instrumental and vocal music
  6. Mistress Azza al Shirazi – instrumental music, specialty in dance band music
  7. Lady Nicolosa d’Isenfir – European dance
  8. Master Johann von Solothurn – instrumental and vocal music
  9. Lady Rhiannon of Raven’s Cove – singing, multi-instrumental, European dance and starting some middle eastern
  10. Lady Maia Bowen – Middle Eastern dance and music; European Dance
  11. Lady Wenllyan Goch – European Dance
  12. Lady Darci of Hawkwood – singer and multi-instrumentalist (including Hurdy Gurdy!)
  13. Lady Machteld Cleine – Singing and theater, theater techniques and theater science, encompassing theater history, practice, sociology, audience reaction and societal context
  14. Mistress Dervila Ni Leanon and Baroness Sophia the Orange – administrative and mentoring support

The Royal Players team for Year 3 will add a new member, Lord Owain Wolfe, who recently graduated from Highpoint University with a degree in Theater. He has participated in the commedia troupe I Firenzi, worked with other Royal Players Machteld, Meriorie, and Sophia to create a Theater Track at Atlantia University, and is also an avid fencer.

Year 2 team members Azza and Maia have done amazing work and are opting out for Year 3. The Atlantia Dance Band exists greatly because of the amazingly well-organized materials Mistress Azza has produced for musicians to prepare ahead of a dance band event.  Lady Maia has been impressively dedicated to teaching dance, both European and Middle Eastern to anyone in her travels. Her zills classes have been a hit at events and demos.

Mistress Dervila is also retiring from the Royal Players program this year. Her steadfast belief in the program was key to creating it and kicking it off in 2016, and we would not be here if she had not been so supportive.

The total number of activities for Performing Arts that the Royal Players have created or supported in the past year comes to 205!  The number of events that Royal Players attended totaled 48 not including rehearsals!

If you are seeking assistance in creating performing arts at your event, please reach out to the Royal Players team for support!  A public facebook group is available for anyone to post and reach the team, and anyone is welcome to email me, the administrator of the team, with any questions or requests for help. Last summer, our beloved Queen Thora approved and blessed a new experiment by the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild – the Royal Players program! This team has the mission to create time and space for Performing Arts activities at events throughout the kingdom and model excellence in performing. The Royal Players team is presented and approved by Their Majesties of Atlantia and presented to the populace at Pennsic. They serve a one year term, then they have the option to continue or opt out. The Royal Players of Atlantia – a new program!

During the Royal Court at Pennsic, August 10, 2016, Their Majesties Dietrich and Thora kicked off a new program for supporting the Performing Arts in Atlantia beyond their reign:

The Royal Players of Atlantia

royal-players-3-of-10-with-text-at-university

The Royal Players of Atlantia is a group of 10 talented performers (just 3 shown above), spread geographically throughout the kingdom, who have well developed skills in a wide variety of Performing Arts:

  • Vocal and instrumental
  • Solo and ensemble
  • Music and theater
  • Scripted and improvisation
  • Secular and sacred
  • Dance – both Middle Eastern and European
  • And those performing arts that don’t fit into a category!

The mission of the Royal Players of Atlantia is to serve as resources for event staff to help make time and space for all Performing Arts to happen at events throughout the kingdom and then to model excellence in performing themselves.

Their term of service is one year, September to August, ensuring that among them at least one performer can travel to Gulf Wars and Pennsic to represent Atlantia in the Performing Arts communities there. For this first year, the Royal Players were appointed by Their Royal Majesties Dietrich and Thora, and future teams of Royal Players may be chosen by appointment or audition at the whim of the Crown. The Royal Bard(s) work as partners with the Royal Players and may serve as a Royal Player at the whim of the Crown. Administrative support to the Royal Players is provided by the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild.

When you have need of music, entertainment, and the environmental richness that performing arts brings, reach out to these people and they will help you create the magic!

  3. Use of the Googlegroup is growing constantly! We’re up to 74 members!

Status of recruiting:

  1. Lord Jaume de Monco is our Guild liaison for Atlantia University for Fall and Winter. Many thanks to Vrowe Machteld for organizing our 2.5 Performing Arts Tracks for this Summer University!
  2. Mistress Dervila has accepted the position for Librarian! She is working with our WordPress blog to build in the right plugin to allow people to upload documents and other files like MP3s to share and keep organized. This is an ongoing effort, so we will use the Google Shared Drive as an interim solution.
    1. THIS is the link for the Google Shared Drive for our Guild:  https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-ta6p8JkuHPOVc0Tk0tellxcEU&usp=sharing

Special Projects:

  • Ladies of the Rose song, poetry, and other performance event for new, Golden Rose inspired event
    • Ideas for this concept should be posted to the Guild email list “atlantiaperformingartsguild AT googlegroups DOT com”
    • Queen Thora expressed interest in what we could propose to her. Her reign only lasts so long, so get your ideas moving and we might be able to create something!
  • We need heraldry for the Guild – and a graphic for it! The graphic should be the size of an avatar for Facebook.
  • Performing Arts Demo Hour at Kingdom A&S Festival was AWESOME!  And the video is now up at:  https://youtu.be/8NYrd9kS7Ww  Many thanks to Manus MacDhai for proessing the video!
  • Another hour of video from KASF is also available (Thanks again Manus!) for the many performers who demonstrated their performing prowess before the Demo Hour at KASF!!!  Here’s the link to that video:  https://youtu.be/6ifUTJwEEFI
  • War of the Wings has a new Performing Arts Coordinator: Lord Akiyama Kazuhiko!  (“Sata Prescott” on Facebook)  He is seeking your ideas on what he can organize for you at WOW and offers also this sign up sheet for teaching classes:  http://goo.gl/forms/WFBuy3XU6gdJQE7k1

Want to express an opinion or tell everyone what you want? Go for it!  You’re welcome to say so at the Guild meeting or post an email to the email list!

Keep in touch!

    2. Performing Arts Competitions Best Practices – lead by Lady Scholastica Joycours and milady Reynsa Keyferin
    3. Troubleshooting group – lead by our two Kingdom Bards, Master Ruaidhri an Cu and Lord Gideon ap Stephen
    4. Online Resources for Sharing:  This one went into some detail….
      1. We have the Atlantia Performing Arts Blog here: https://perform.atlantia.sca.org/
        1. This includes a page for handy links to bardic and other performing resources recently re-organized by our friend Catarina di Paulo / Shannon Hamilton.
        2. This includes pages for: Kingdom Noteables, Performer’s Directory, Performing Groups, a separate page for the Guild, and more tidbits.
      2. Mistress Dervila is working on creating a library on this blog. It’s built with WordPress, so it’s really a Content Management System – one that Dervila has some experience with.
      3. While Dervila is working on that library, we will use a new Google Drive shared with the Google Group email list for the Guild. That means that if you’re email address is on the Google Group email list for the Guild, you have access to that shared drive on Google Drive.
        1. This allows us to share documents and resources immediately and,
        2. this allows us to see what files people want to share and what categories they settle out into before Dervila launches the new library. The categories we actually end up using over the next few months will be the ones we start with in the new library.
        3. The link for the Google Drive is here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-ta6p8JkuHPOVc0Tk0tellxcEU
        4. The link for the Google Group email list is here (if you’re not already on it):  https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/atlantiaperformingartsguild
    5. Guild jobs
      1. The position of University of Atlantia Liaison for the Guild is being shared this year between Lady Machteld Cleine and Lord Jaume de Monco.  Machteld will handle organizing classes for Performing Arts for the Summer University session and Jaume will handle organizing classes for the Fall University session.
        1. When you’re ready to submit your classes for Summer University, please send email to Machteld first. She’s going to ensure that certain basic performing skills classes get taught for sure and that other classes for certain audiences don’t conflict (like having two commedia classes in the same hour slot). Jaume will follow in the Fall.
      2. Mistress Dervila is holding the position of our Librarian, but she and I can both use some help from folks who are savvy to Google and WordPress resources.
        1. Lord Kazuhiko and Harper an Cu both volunteered to pitch in on that after this Spring semester is over.
        2. More help is welcome!
      3. I’m still looking for a Point of Contact for every single SCA group in Atlantia. Some groups have a “Bardic Champion” or “Performing Arts Champion” but most don’t.  If you’re willing to step up as a Point of Contact for your local SCA group as the “person who knows something about Performing Arts and maybe how to get ahold of that crazy Guild”, please let me know!
  2. New Projects

    1. Lady Teleri the Well Prepared has started working with our very music-friendly Princess of Atlantia as a “Royal Entertainment Coordinator.” (That’s a draft job title.)  I did this job for Amos and Isabella during their reign, and it was rather successful at creating more performing arts activities at Royal Progress events.  Since there is a great deal of administrative legwork involved in creating Performing Arts activities that work seamlessly and smoothly with Royal Progress events, having a person on the Royal Staff that handles all that email and planning ahead is extremely helpful.
      1. We all predict that our two Kingdom Bards and Teleri will all work as a team when the opportunity presents itself to make more and better Performing Arts opportunities happen at Royal Progress events.
    2. Dance Band Musicians
      1. Lady Evelynne Merrymet expressed a deep desire to have live musicians at dance practices.  Mistress Azza concurred with this given her deep enjoyment of playing live music for dancers.
        1. I strongly recommend using the Pennsic Pile sheet music if you’re a musician playing for dancing because the copyright in versions since Pennsic 42 have been cleared to allow for use at SCA events AND the sheet music is arranged for the correct repeat structure for all the dances as they’re danced at Pennsic.
        2. Other sheet music resources exist, but respect of copyright is important, so please check the copyright before you run sheet music through a copier.
        3. Get the Pennsic Pile in PDF download here:  http://pennsicdance.aands.org/pennsic44/PennsicPile44.pdf
    3. Pictures of Performers for the Roster
      1. Mistress Dervila has a method to create a page on the Performing Arts blog that can serve as a directory that INCLUDES PICTURES! This has been a technological struggle for me. I’ve set up text only rosters for folks to submit their data on what they perform and who they are, but I have not been able to easily create a roster with pictures. Now that Dervila has a way to do it, we can now fill our roster with pictures!
      2. Please be prepared to send in pictures once we find the best place to put them before Dervila’s ready with the new directory.
    4. Performing Arts Groups
      1. I need help fleshing out the content pages for Performing Arts Groups on the blog. I need help gathering info on the following groups:
        1. Ladies Fair singing group
        2. Ponte Alto Singers
        3. PAGE
      2. If anyone’s willing to write up a blog post on any one of these groups, or any MORE groups you’re aware of – please let me know!!
    5. Guild Heraldry and Online Graphics help needed
      1. The Kingdom MOAS wants us to nail down some heraldry for the Guild. We also need some better graphics for the blog.
      2. Eoin Mac Edhbaird volunteered to help in this, and if there are other herald & graphics folks interested in helping, please pipe up! We may need a committee for this.

The next meeting of the Guild is TBD. It will be after Gulf Wars for sure!!

Thank you all for pitching in to the Atlantia Performing Arts Guild!
